Mouse & Mozilla Webmaker Summer Institute
UPDATE: MISSED THE INFOSESSION? WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE!
Mouse and Mozilla are joining forces to ready a WebMaking movement in schools across the US. We are looking for 10 pioneering Mouse Squad educators to join us in NYC for the first ever Summer WebMaker Institute - a 2-day intensive PD event that will prepare you to return to your school community to integrate webmaking and empower your learners as mentors, too!
- WHEN: Thursday, 7/10 - Friday, 7/11 - 9am - 4pm
- WHERE: New York, NY TBD.
- WHO: We are looking for Mouse Squad Coordinators from across the national network to submit proposals to participate. Only 10 spots are available.
WHY TEACH THE WEB?
In 15 years working at the intersection of learning and technology, Mouse has seen - and been an influencing part of - the field’s evolving obsession with “new literacies” emerging from the tools, practices, and culture of digital life. The Web, however, has long outlived mere faddism and yet the field of education has done little to help frame it’s tools, practices, and culture as a legitimate domain to help educators and learners focus on building critical skills and competencies. No group of educators is better prepared to help further the mission of building web literacies than the Coordinators of Mouse’s program network.
The Web Literacy Standard is a map of competencies and skills that Mozilla, Mouse and a large community of stakeholders believe are important to pay attention to when getting better at reading, writing and participating on the web. Go to WebMaker.org for more info on the Teach the Web movement.
WHAT IS INCLUDED:
- 2 full days of hands-on professional development in web literacy led by Mouse & Mozilla educators
- An opportunity to build a support network of Mouse Squad Coordinators teaching webmaking
- Access to great webmaking content and tools that align to the Mozilla's Web Literacy Learning Map
- Each accepted educator will receive a $350 stipend
- Travel stipends available for educators outside of NYC who apply (funds for travel are limited and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis)
WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS?
Participation will be limited, and will be dependent upon alignment to the goals of your school and Mouse’s program, as indicated in your short proposal (see below). To participate in Mouse’s Summer WebMaker Institute, you must have the support of your principal to make web literacy a goal for your 2014-2015 school year, across subject areas. The minimum commitment will be:
- facilitate the pilot WebMaking curriculum with your Mouse Squad students over the fall.
- lead (with support from your squad) a 2-hour PD workshop for at least 10 teachers in your school to introduce the Web Literacy Standard by the end of November 2014.
- submit feedback and survey results to Mouse by the end of December.
- join the Mozilla WebMaker Mentors google group to participate in ongoing developments related to WebMaker.org and web literacy.
READY TO APPLY?
1. Attend the Webmaker Info-session on Google Hangouts-on-Air on Wednesday, March 12th at 4PM EST. Register here.
2. Submit your short proposal through this Google Form indicating your school's interest by 5PM on Friday, March 21st.
We hope to hear from you soon, and that you're as excited as we are about this opportunity! Sites applying to participate will be contacted by phone or email for follow-up.
