Mouse Corps Application

Mouse Corps is a youth-centered design and technology program that develops emerging leadership, professional and technical skills of select high school students from Mouse Squads across NYC.

Students taking part in this year long afterschool program are self-proclaimed geeks, techies, artists, activists, innovators and tinkerers who will achieve over 100 hours of applied design, technology, workplace and leadership experience through their participation in Mouse Corps.

Over the course of the program students brainstorm, prototype, and present their Legacy Project, a new technology which addresses a social need, while building their skills and exploring career pathways with technology mentors across diverse professional settings.

How to Apply

  • Fill out this application by Tuesday Oct. 7th [scroll down].
  • Attend the October 7th Mouse Corps Open House @ 4pm Location TBD
  • Mouse will let you know if you have been accepted within 1 week.
  • If you are accepted, you and a parent/guardian will sign the Mouse Corps Pledge.
  • You and your fellow Mouse Corps team members will attend all weekly Tuesday meetings after-school at 4pm.
  • All Mouse Corps Candidates are eligible to apply for seasonal activities like Summer Apprenticeships and Mouse Corps Team Retreats, when available.

The Legacy Project

mcorps_legacy_sm.png The Legacy Project: Working with professional leaders in design and organizations like IDEO and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, you will learn the fundamentals of human-centered design including embracing iterative processes and constructive collaboration. Each year, Mouse Corps students focus their projects around new issues, such as immigration, renewable energy, or blindness.


Technology Mentoring & Apprenticeships

Mouse Corps students continue to grow their design and technology skills with professional mentors in authentic workplaces. From robotics to app development, Mouse partners with leaders in technology, media and design to serve as technology mentors, teaching students the skills they need to implement their Legacy Projects.

After participating in several professionalism activities and building digital portfolios, students are eligible to apply for several paid summer apprenticeship opportunities with partnering organizations. Mouse Corps students benefit from this unique opportunity to explore their interest in technology, learn about diverse career paths, and connect with an inspiring role model who can share insight into their own professional journey.

Project Presentation

Mouse Corps groups prepare engaging and persuasive presentations of their new Legacy Projects for Emoti-Con! The NYC Youth Digital Media and Technology Challenge, Maker Faire and more! Led and directed by youth participants, these presentations include the final prototype of their project and an illustrative demonstration detailing the design process itself.

In Mouse Corps, you'll spend the entire year in a small team with other students. Each person on a team brings a unique important perspective, skill-set, and personality. Check the boxes below that best describe your team-work style (Try to select no more than 3).

If you were going to pick an issue in your local/global community and create a start-up organization to address this issue, what would it look like?

Your start-up can be anything from a local lemonade stand, to a large software corporation, from a global non-profit to small business. Be Creative!

Time Commitment

Mouse Corps meets every Tuesday throughout the school year.

To participate in Mouse Corps, you must be available to attend after-school workshops starting at 4:00pm in Manhattan. Workshops are almost always on Tuesdays, with occasional Saturdays (no more than a few times a year).

NOTE: All meetings are required. You will not be allowed to return if you miss more than 3 workshops with out contacting us in advance with a reasonable excuse.

Please let us know if you have any commitments after-school that will make it hard for you to attend meetings on time.

Sign up for the Mouse Corps Open House

All interested applicants must attend the Mouse Corps Open House event on Tuesday, October 7th from 4pm - 5:30pm. At the open house, you will meet the returning Mouse Corps students and learn more about the program. The event location will be emailed to you once you have applied.
